NOT INTERESTED – Liverpool were offered Marcos Llorente before he completed transfer from Real Madrid to Atletico Madrid, agent confirms
Atletico signed the midfielder on a five-year deal after agreeing a £35million fee with city rivals Real
Liverpool were offered the opportunity to sign Marcos Llorente before he joined Atletico Madrid this summer.
The 24-year-old left Real Madrid to join their city rivals earlier this month, allegedly to replace Manchester City-bound Rodri in Atleti’s midfield.
The midfielder signed a five-year contract with Atletico after a £35million fee was agreed between the two clubs.
Llorente managed just two appearances for Real since Zinedine Zidane returned as manager, and he appeared to be surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu.
Arsenal and Manchester United were both linked with a move for the Spaniard and he was thought to be keen on a move to the Premier League.
And his agent, Julio Llorente, has now revealed he tried to secure the 24-year-old a switch to English football – with Liverpool approached over a potential summer deal for the former Spain youth international.
He told Cadena SER: “I contacted several clubs to let them know what happened, the conversation that Zidane and Marcos had.”
“One of them was Liverpool, but Marcos’ position was covered and it wasn’t a priority.
“But Atletico are those who perhaps took the strongest step and convinced us. I think we’re right. I hope it’s like that, I hope Marcos does very well.”
Llorente is in line to replace Rodri at the Wanda Metropolitano, with the former Villarreal midfielder expected to complete a £62million move to Man City over the coming weeks./TalkSport/
