Jurgen Klopp almost signed Chelsea’s Emerson Palmieri instead of Andrew Robertson in 2017, according to a report.
Brazilian defender Emerson was with Roma at the time and, according to The Athetic, was a target for Klopp before he got injured.
The 25-year-old had forced his way into the Serie A side’s first team, but then picked up a serious ACL injury on the final day of the 2016/17 season, forcing Klopp to look elsewhere.
The report is in stark contrast to a report in the Liverpool Echo 12 months ago, which claimed Klopp instead wanted to sign Ben Chilwell from Leicester.
Chilwell, who was 19 at the time, was on loan at Huddersfield in 2015/16 and Klopp targeted the full-back, who had yet to establish himself at Leicester.
Liverpool bid £5million for Chilwell, plus an additional £2million in add-ons, but Leicester turned it down and the season after they signed Robertson.
Robertson arrived from Hull for £8million in the summer of 2017 to provide competition for Alberto Moreno. But such has been the left-back’s rise in prominence that he surpassed Moreno quickly and has made that berth his own.
It could have been different had Klopp, who was understood to be tracking Emerson very closely, not picked up his injury.
Emerson went on to sign for Chelsea in the summer of 2018 in an £18m deal, but wstruggled to get regular game time. Now though Emerson has become a firm favourite of Frank Lampard’s and is yet to miss a minute so far./TeamTalk/
